Battery and energy storage coverage

Battery energy storage news — grid-scale BESS procurement, hybrid solar-plus-storage projects, cell pricing, and the market rules that determine whether storage earns a return.

Storage is the constraint that decides how far solar can go on any grid. Arcnex Energy covers battery energy storage system procurement, hybrid project design, and the commercial arrangements that make storage bankable.

Coverage includes grid-scale BESS tenders and awards, solar-plus-storage hybrid tariffs, cell chemistry and pricing trends, duration requirements, ancillary services and capacity market rules, and behind-the-meter storage for commercial and industrial users.

ANSWERS

Battery storage questions

What is a BESS?

A battery energy storage system (BESS) is a grid-connected installation that stores electricity — usually in lithium-ion cells — and discharges it later to shift solar generation into evening demand, firm up supply, or provide grid services.

Why is storage being added to solar projects?

Solar generates in the middle of the day while peak demand often falls in the evening. Adding storage lets a project shift generation to when the grid needs it, which is increasingly written directly into tender requirements.
